Ukraine may be close to a major drone deal with the United States, while former NASA chief Bill Nelson warns that China’s space plans could challenge U.S. pow
A current English news story adapted for language learners at B1, with audio, transcript, vocabulary and comprehension work.
Welcome to LinguaWire English B1.
Today we have two stories: Ukraine’s drone deal with the U.S., and Bill Nelson’s warning about China in space.
Everything we say today is written out for you, with the vocabulary explained, at linguawire.com.
Ukraine may be close to signing a drone defense deal with the United States.
Now we go to Liam, our LinguaWire correspondent for society.
Thanks, Daniel. Sources say Ukraine is ready to sign a landmark deal with the U.S.
They say Zelenskyy may sign it in New York this week.
So this is not just another arms story. It sounds bigger than that.
It is bigger. The deal could expand testing and production of Ukrainian defense technology in the U.S.
That would move the two countries beyond simply buying equipment.
What makes Ukraine so valuable here?
The report points to drones, but also to the software, operators, and teams behind them.
Experts say Ukraine has learned fast during the war.
So the value is not only the machine. It is the people using it.
Exactly. One expert said the West needs to understand that it is not just about having the tech.
It is about how the tech is used.
And this week gives the story a public stage, with the UN meeting in New York.
Yes. The sources said the deal could also be finalized later if the U.S. is not ready this week.
So the timing is still uncertain.
That caution matters. A lot of headlines make deals sound finished before they are.
What else does the report say about Ukraine’s wider plans?
Ukraine has already signed defense agreements with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
Those deals match foreign money with Ukraine’s growing defense manufacturing industry.
So this is also about scale, not only military help.
Right. Zelenskyy has said Ukraine aims to make 10 million drones this year.
The report compares that with roughly 50,000 drones the U.S. Army acquired in 2025.
That number really changes the picture.
It does. The bigger lesson is that drones are only part of the story.
Training, adaptation, and fast changes matter just as much as hardware.
Thanks, Liam.
A former NASA leader is warning that China wants to dominate space.
Now we go to Ella, our LinguaWire correspondent for society.
Thanks, Daniel. Bill Nelson uses a new memoir to make a sharp warning about China’s space plans.
He writes that Beijing’s intended strategy is to dominate “the high ground of the twenty-first century.”
That is a strong phrase. Is this mainly about the moon?
The book is broader than that, but the moon is part of the picture.
Nelson says the United States must do all it can to keep its lead in space exploration.
What made him so concerned in the first place?
He points to the Chinese spy balloon that crossed the United States in early 2023.
Nelson says NASA helped the U.S. military by using its knowledge of balloons, the stratosphere, and air currents.
So that incident became a symbol for something bigger.
Yes. Nelson says many Americans saw only a balloon in their airspace.
He saw a warning about the next great rivalry.
That changes how people think about space and security.
It does. He says the competition is not only on land or sea.
He says it is in the skies above us and even beyond our atmosphere.
How does his own background fit into this?
He is not speaking as an outsider.
Nelson was a congressman and a senator from Florida.
He was also a space shuttle mission specialist in 1986.
And he served as NASA administrator from 2021 to 2025 under President Biden.
That gives his warning extra weight.
It does. He also says he has long worried about technology theft from the West.
He supported a rule that tightly limits NASA cooperation with China’s space program.
So the book is not just memoir. It is a warning about where the rivalry may go.
Exactly. It shows how space has become part of a direct power competition.
Here are three useful words from the first story.
technology
Technology means the tools, machines, and systems people use to do work. In the story, it was used in “Ukrainian defense technology.” An example: New technology can make trains safer.
partnership
A partnership is a close working relationship between people, companies, or countries. The story used it in “partnerships with Ukraine’s defense industry.” Example: The two hospitals formed a partnership to share doctors.
deal
A deal is an agreement between two sides. The story used it in “a landmark deal.” Example: They signed a deal to sell clean power equipment.
The next great rivalry will not be fought on land or sea.
We use will not plus the base verb to talk about a future event that we say will not happen.
will not be fought
“The next great rivalry will not be fought on land or sea, but in the skies above us, and even beyond our atmosphere.”
The final will not be played on Friday.
Our meeting will not be held in the morning.
Repeat after me: will not be fought
