Can Céline Dion Make a Big Comeback in Paris?

Celine Dion returned to the stage in Paris, and a farmer-style repair test showed how a John Deere tractor problem could be fixed in minutes.

A current English news story adapted for language learners at A2, with audio, transcript, vocabulary and comprehension work.

Welcome to LinguaWire English A2.

Today we have two stories: a tractor repair service and Celine Dion in Paris.

We put everything in writing for you. Vocabulary is explained at linguawire.com.

A tractor problem is fixed with John Deere’s new repair service

A tractor is broken, and a new repair tool is being tested.

Now we go to Ella, our LinguaWire correspondent for technology.

Thanks, Daniel. I tried the repair service myself.

It was surprisingly simple.

That sounds like a big change. What was broken?

The problem was a water-in-fuel sensor.

It was inside a John Deere tractor.

A small wire was disconnected.

Where were you when you tried this?

I was at John Deere’s office in Santa Clara, California.

I was using a laptop there.

So the software guided you. What did it show?

I typed a question.

The program showed instructions and pictures from the manual.

The pictures matched the machine’s serial number.

So the steps were specific to that tractor.

That is very exact. What did you do next?

I walked to the tractor.

I found the sensor.

I saw two wires hanging loose.

I pushed the wires together.

Then I heard a click.

After that, I checked the screen again.

And the warning disappeared?

Yes. The red notice cleared.

The tractor looked fine again.

In only a few minutes, the repair was done.

That is quick. Do farmers trust this service?

Not all of them.

People have often seen the company as slow. It lets owners fix their own machines.

So this is a big shift for them.

Yes. The company is showing a service called Operations Center Pro Service.

One senior leader said it is meant to be owner-friendly.

It sounds like the company is opening the door a little wider. What else did he say?

He said that was the company’s intent.

He also said the service works with almost every machine with electronics.

So it is not just for one tractor model.

Right. It is for many John Deere machines.

That is why the test mattered so much.

And did the employees around you seem confident about it?

They were patient with me.

They also congratulated me after the fix.

Thanks, Ella.

Thanks, Daniel.

Celine Dion returns to the stage in Paris

Celine Dion has returned to the stage in Paris.

Now we go to Ethan, our LinguaWire correspondent for culture.

Thanks, Daniel. The show in Paris was emotional.

It was emotional from the start.

What happened on Saturday?

Celine Dion began the first show of a 26-show run.

It was at Paris La Defense Arena.

About 30,000 people were there.

That is a huge crowd. Why was this return so important?

She had a long break because of health problems.

In 2022, doctors diagnosed her with a rare nerve disorder.

That disorder is called stiff person syndrome.

So this was not a normal concert.

No. She told the audience, “I made a promise to come back.”

She also said, “I missed you.”

Those words must have landed strongly.

Yes. She cried after one song.

She had tears several times during the night.

The show was also late to start, by about 50 minutes.

So the night was emotional and tense.

Yes, and some critics said her voice sounded fragile at first.

But they also said it still sounded real.

She changed clothes during the show.

She started in a black gown.

That sounds like a big stage show. What happened later?

Later she wore a trouser suit.

Some critics said that showed her dance moves.

They said she looked full of energy.

And this is only the start of the run, right?

Yes. She will keep performing in Paris through September and October.

And she will go on into the New Year.

Thanks, Ethan.

Thanks, Daniel.

Let’s look at three words from the first story.

the sensor

It means a small part that notices a problem. Example: The sensor showed the door was open.

the manual

It means a book or guide with instructions. Example: I checked the manual before fixing the chair.

the screen

It means the flat part of a computer or phone. Example: The message appeared on the screen.

late to start

We use this pattern when something begins later than planned.

The form is was or were plus an adjective, then to and a verb.

“The show was also late to start, by about 50 minutes.”

“The bus was late to start because of the traffic.”

Repeat after me: was late to start
