Ukraine will get free cyber defence help, and Germany has set a new target to stop using fossil fuels by 2045.
A current English news story adapted for language learners at A1, with audio, transcript, vocabulary and comprehension work.
Welcome to LinguaWire English A1.
Today we have two stories. Ukraine and cyber help. Germany and fossil fuels.
Everything we say today is written out for you. The vocabulary is explained at linguawire.com.
OpenAI is giving Ukraine new cyber help.
Now we go to Chloe, our LinguaWire correspondent for technology.
Thanks, Daniel. Ukraine is getting a new tool.
It should help protect digital systems.
That sounds like a big step. What exactly is being shared?
OpenAI says it will share its cyber defence system.
Its name is Daybreak.
It will be free for the Ukraine government.
So this is about more than computers?
Yes. The aim is to protect civilian infrastructure.
That means things people use every day.
Civilian infrastructure means things people use every day, right?
Yes. The examples given are hospitals and power plants.
If those systems fail, many people can feel it fast.
So this is about daily life, not just computers.
Exactly. The tools can look for weak points.
They work in digital systems.
Then they can help make fixes quickly.
And the numbers in the report were striking.
Yes. Ukraine’s cyber team says it recorded nearly 6,000 attacks in 2025.
That gives a sense of the pressure on the country.
Nearly 6,000 is a lot. Who is talking about the deal?
One voice is George Osborne.
He now leads OpenAI for Countries.
He said to defend civilian infrastructure.
That is a clear line. Did experts say anything else?
Yes. Some cyber experts said stronger defence can help a lot.
One expert said Ukraine already has strong cyber skills.
The same expert also said the pressure is heavy.
So the help is welcome, but the risk stays.
Yes. The report also says AI tools can help attackers.
So the same power can be used for defence or harm.
Thanks, Chloe.
Germany has made a big climate promise.
Now we go to Noah, our LinguaWire correspondent for environment.
Thanks, Daniel. Germany has set a new target.
It is for fossil fuels.
What is the new target?
The German government wants to phase out fossil fuels by 2045.
This is the first time it has said that so clearly.
That is a sharp change in wording.
Yes. Before, the promise was only about carbon neutrality.
Now the plan says to move away from fossil fuels.
What else is in the plan?
The plan wants more clean power by 2030.
It says renewable energy should rise to 80%.
So more clean electricity is part of the road ahead.
Exactly. The plan also keeps a target to wind down coal.
And it talks about a possible earlier coal exit in 2035.
There is also a link to heat in homes, I think.
Yes. The plan points to heat pumps as a cleaner choice.
It also says heat pumps now make up about half.
That is of new home heating systems.
That is a useful detail. Was there any warning in the report?
Yes. Some campaigners praised the shift.
But one warned the government still pushes gas too hard.
So the plan is real, but the debate is not over.
That is right. Critics say the change must move faster.
Supporters say the roadmap is only the starting line.
Thanks, Noah.
Let's look at three useful words from the first story.
defence
Protection against attack. In the story: “share its cyber defence system.”
Example: The defence of the school was strong.
civilian
A civilian is a person who is not a soldier. In the story: “protect civilian infrastructure.”
Example: The hospital helped civilian families.
infrastructure
The basic systems people use, like power and hospitals. In the story: “protect civilian infrastructure.”
Example: The town needs better road infrastructure.
says
We use the simple present for facts and reports. With he, she, or it, add -s.
Example one: OpenAI says it will share Daybreak for free.
Example two: The minister says the plan is important.
Repeat after me: says
