Hungary's Only Nuclear Plant Shuts Down as Danube Hits 30-Year Low

Trump is looking at more AI controls after hacking incidents. The episode also explains how very low Danube water may force a nuclear plant to stop.

A current English news story adapted for language learners at A1, with audio, transcript, vocabulary and comprehension work.

Welcome to LinguaWire English A1.

Today we have two stories: AI in the US, and low Danube water.

Full transcripts and vocabulary are at linguawire.com.

Trump looks at new AI controls after hacking incidents

AI controls after hacking incidents.

Now we go to Sophie, our LinguaWire correspondent for technology.

The White House is looking at new AI controls.

So this is a change in tone.

Yes, it is. Trump said the government may control AI tools more.

What made him say that now?

Recent hacking incidents pushed the issue up the list.

He was asked about OpenAI tools and other companies' private tech.

And he did not sound relaxed about it.

No. He said, “We’re looking at AI, we’re looking at controls.”

He also said the US wants to lead.

That sounds careful, not sudden.

Exactly. He said any control would have to be done carefully.

He did not want rules that would leave the US behind China.

So the worry is both safety and speed.

That is right. The White House has been more hands-off before.

Now this sounds like a possible shift.

What happened with OpenAI itself?

Last week, OpenAI took responsibility for two hacking incidents.

The company said its AI tools did things they should not.

That is a serious line to hear.

It is. It shows why the controls talk is growing now.

The government is trying to balance risk and competition.

Was Trump talking about a full ban, or something smaller?

He did not say ban. He said some kind of control is on the table.

The idea is not clear yet, but the discussion is real.

And he tied that to China as well, right?

Yes. He said he did not want the US second to China.

He also said China has very few AI controls.

That makes the story bigger than one company.

Exactly. It is about safety, business, and world competition.

What do we know about the White House response?

The White House has been asked for more comment.

The Chinese embassy in Washington was also contacted for comment.

So for now we have comments, but also open questions.

Yes. The main change is the new tone from the Trump administration.

Low Danube water may stop a nuclear plant

Low water on the Danube and a plant shutdown.

Now we go to Owen, our LinguaWire correspondent for environment.

The Danube is so low that one nuclear plant may stop.

This is about water, but also power.

Yes. Hungary’s only nuclear plant will shut down for the first time.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar said that.

Why does the river matter so much?

The plant uses the Danube for cooling.

The water is now too low for the suction nozzles.

That image is easy to picture.

Yes, and it shows the problem clearly.

If the plant stops, power could be critical from Monday.

So people may feel this in daily life.

They may. Magyar asked people to cut energy use at peak times.

He named 17:00 to 22:00.

What did he ask people not to do?

He said people should use less charging and air conditioning.

And this is not only Hungary, right?

Right. Several countries have very low rain and high heat.

Parts of the Danube are at their lowest level for 30 years.

So this is a river problem with a wide reach.

Exactly. Romania and Serbia are also feeling it.

In Romania, one nuclear reactor has also been shut down.

What else did Magyar warn about?

He said a rotational shutdown regime was also possible.

He said the government may list users with limited use.

That sounds like a hard step for people.

It does. He linked it to the heatwave and the grid balance.

And the heat is still there?

Yes, around 37C is expected for a week.

Rain has been very low, and temperatures high, much of summer.

So the river, heat, and power system are all under pressure.

Exactly. It is one problem with many effects.

First, three words from the second story.

Cooling means making something less hot. In the story, the plant uses the Danube for cooling. Example: The fan helps with cooling in the room.

Level means how high or low something is. In the story, the water level was very low. Example: The level of the river is lower today.

Peak means the busiest or highest time. In the story, peak times were the hours people should watch. Example: We travel before peak time.

Now one grammar point: be going to.

We use be going to for a plan, or future action.

Example one: Hungary’s only nuclear plant is going to shut down.

Example two: We are going to limit energy use.

Repeat after me: is going to shut down
